Grade One students learned about graphing during the month of March. Since it was Nutrition Month, all graphing revolved around food.
One activity that was successful with the Grade One students was the Smarties Bar Graphing activity! Students were each given two small boxes of Smarties and were asked to graph using coloured pencils. How many Smarties of each colour they had?
Bar graphing and tally charts go hand in hand. Therefore, students voted on their favourite ice cream flavour. Using this information, the students created tally charts and bar graphs. Here are images of students’ work:

We continued learning about tally charts during the month of April. Students learned about Earth Day and ways to help the environment. The students participated in a litterless lunch challenge. Everyday during snack time, students and I checked their lunch box and counted how many litterless items they had. We then recorded the information using a tally chart.
