When working with younger students, monster manners is a great and effective classroom management strategy. Monster manners follows the body listening approach in a fun and age-appropriate way.
As a way to introduce my monster manners expectations to my students, I developed a lesson about it. Using the posters seen below, we had a class discussion about different ways students can be great listeners in class. Following the class discussion, students were asked to pick one (based on the ways discussed) way they could be a good listener in class. Then, they were asked to draw a picture. See examples of student work below.
Monster manners is referred to by me and my students as a way to review classroom expectations. This strategy was extremely effective during my fourth field experience with the Grade One students. Since I entered their classroom in mid-February, it was a great introductory lesson to have students be aware of the expectations of their new teacher.
