Grade 4 – IB Unit Rubrics
My host school during my third field experience was in the process of becoming an IB school. Therefore, each grade needs to complete six different IB units throughout the year. I had the chance to be there to see two full IB units and help plan the third unit. With that being said, I also had the chance to make formative and the summative assessment rubrics for both IB units. Below are the links to access the two summative assessment and one formative rubrics I created for my CT.
Formative Assessment Rubric

I believe that this rubric was effective. Students and parents knew exactly what was expected; and as a result, most students received perfect or near-perfect grades. This experience confirmed the benefit of clearly going over the assignment with students and explaining exactly what are the expectations. Since my CT asked me to create this rubric, I created it according to her wants and standards. That being said, I do feel that at times these rubrics can be difficult for children to understand; therefore, I found it really effective that parents were given a copy of the rubric as well.
Summative Assessment Rubrics

Please note that this rubric was made for an Oral Presentation where students presented on an everyday hero with the research they collected on their chosen hero. My CT and I had a separate rubric to evaluate their Oral Presentation skills. This rubric was taken from a book. To view that rubric, click here.

These types of rubrics are beneficial for teachers to see how well their students have mastered a certain concept or unit. I do believe that these types of rubrics can be complex for students to understand and are more informative for teachers and parents to see the students’ levels. I do see the benefit in summative assessment rubrics; therefore, in my future field experiences and when I have my own classroom, I will be including them but in ways that may be more student-friendly. I will continue to research and find new ways to be able to have students understand the feedback being shown in summative assessments.
