My involvement in the school

During my second field experience, I was involved in various aspects of the school.

  • Every day at lunch, I oversaw and ran the grade six club called “student union.” Student union is designed for grade six students to create their own small clubs, catch up on their homework, practice for their upcoming talent show, etc. During my time at this school, I helped students mostly with any school work and helped some students to practice their dance for the upcoming talent show. As a treat, my CT, my student-teacher partner and I took the students to the park at lunchtime.
  • At the end of every school day, I did bus duty. I made sure that all pre-k students IMG_2184were paired up with a grade six student and that they got onto the right bus. Afterwards, I circulated to make sure that students were loaded onto the buses safely. During my first week at this host school, I also did a few recess duties, following along with the schedule of my initial CT.
  • Due to unforeseen circumstances, I had to change classrooms and
CTs for my last two weeks of my field experience. Since I had made a quick and close connection with the students in the intermediate language classroom, I made it a point to go into their classroom during my spares to see and talk to the students, as well as continue to observe and take on small tasks in their class. Despite this sudden change, I was flexible and adapted to the change with ease. Overall, I had a great field experience.
  • During my spares, I took the opportunity to visit and observe the ASD classrooms. I truly enjoyed my time in both the ASD classrooms and the language classroom. I hope to gain more experience in alternative classrooms.
  • I helped my CT collect information for the graduation t-shirts by going to each of the grade six classrooms and by having the children try the t-shirts for size. I collected and recorded all the information for my CT.
  • I helped the intermediate language classroom finish up with Jacques Cartier posters and display them on the school wall. Below is an example of such a poster:

  • I helped my CT collect information and prepare for the SFA (Success For All) exams. I spoke to every teacher regarding the level that each of their students would receive for the exam. I listened to their concerns and suggestions and made changes accordingly.
  • During the last two weeks of my field placement, I tested about two kindergarten students a day to determine their reading and reading comprehension levels. This was to ensure that they would be placed in the proper SFA level for the next year.

Celebration of Learning

A week after I finished my FE2, the school was hosting a celebration of learning where parents and students come to school after hours to see their children’s work. Even though FE2 had finished a week ago, I went to help my CT set up the classroom and even stayed for the full event. This was an opportunity for me to gain more experience to talk to parents. It was also such a rewarding opportunity to see students so excited to show their parents their work and for how proud parents were of their children. I also received some lovely feedback from grade six parents about things their children said about me. Celebration of learning was also a chance for me to see the art activity I conducted with the students up on the walls for parents to see!
